The master of the "random shot."

In memory of one of the fashion world’s greatest photographers.
"Fashion is like a dream or a reverie. The photograph leaves only a mysterious vision in front of us."
Part 1. Beginning
Patrick Demarchelier is one of the most respected photographers in the world of fashion. He has done covers and spreads for the world’s largest magazines, advertising and fashion shoots for the world’s leading companies, those brands that today are directly related to the concepts of "fashion" and "style".
His name is inseparable from this mythical world that has made beauty its cult, a world created largely because of him, the photographer.

It was there that he was noticed by Conde Nast Art Director Alexander Lieberman, an iconic figure in the glossy world, and invited to work for American Vogue. Patrick was about 30 years old at the time.
When I asked him what professional qualities are most important for a photographer, he replied: firstly, "good eyes", i.e. the ability to see the frame. Secondly, a sense and understanding of light, as it plays the most important role in photography. But the most important thing is experience.

"With a lot of practice, you’ll find a direction you enjoy working in, and it will be your own journey"
Part 2. New York
In 1975, Patrick Demarchelier moved to New York, incidentally without knowing a word of English. However, his images spoke better than any words: the American fashion community fell in love with the modest Frenchman instantly, and orders poured in one after another. The next 20 years were productive: the photographer was noticed by Conde Nast Publications, and soon Patrick’s work was regularly featured in GQ and then in the legendary Vogue.

"We were talking, laughing, and then a click and the camera seemed to disappear. It was as if it wasn’t supposed to be there."
Part 3. Diana
In 1989, Patrick Demarchelier became Princess Diana’s personal photographer. Patrick showed the world a very different princess: open, gentle, relaxed. Thus, Demarchelier became the first non-British photographer allowed to shoot members of the royal family.

Part 4. Naturalness
Patrick Demarchelier is all about naturalness. "I like it when girls express themselves, I let them do it. When you’re relaxed and feeling good, you express yourself better than when you’re nervous. So it’s important that the model is comfortable," he says.

"Beauty is not only about beautiful models and beautiful dresses. Beauty is all around us."
"When the model is dressed in beautiful clothes, you don’t have to tell her how to hold herself, where her hands should be. The girl starts to move according to the outfit she’s trying on, and you get fantastic movements that are completely natural for a person in such a wonderful outfit. I don’t really like to control people, to tell them how to act, I like to catch the moment when people start to express themselves.
"I like to work in motion and when something spontaneous happens," he says already in the movie. — The most beautiful photos are often those taken in the first five minutes. Whether they’re models or actresses. I think it’s funny. As long as she (the heroine) doesn’t realize what she has to portray, she looks natural and direct. That’s the first thing I notice before I start working. Then I often fail to do better.

Patrick Demarchelier
Victor Demarchelier, the son of his father, grew up not only on the set, but also surrounded by the works of other "fashion recluse", all the photographic heritage of the XX century, the great names in fashion were present in his life from birth. When he became a photographer, he found his way, subtly and ironically weaving omages to the great photographic ancestors into his images.

Part 5. Magazine covers
"I never looked for success. I worked. When you are young, you can’t think about success at all. You just have to do your job and try to do it better and better. And when the top is reached — try to surpass it. And one day success will find you."
